Simply The Story (STS)

Information for Potential Workshop Hosts

The God’s Story Project (TGSP) DSCN0168_15_story_tellers_presenting_their_stories_do_not_crop_blendloves to partner with believers around the world by providing teams of STS instructors to lead workshops.

Here is a basic description of how we set up and run workshops and what we need from partnering hosts.

Training Schedule

In STS workshops, instructors first train a small group of core attendees who DSC02062_Learning_storyare interested both in learning STS and in being taught how to train others. In 18 hours of interactive teaching, a lot of small group discovery and personalized hands-on STS coaching takes place.

Attendees learn and prepare a Bible story, and lead others in a discussion of the story. As well they learn how to lead others in small group preparation of a story for ministry.

Then, new people join the workshop. Up to 5 new attendees can join for every core person just trained. In the next 19 hours, these new attendees learn to tell Bible stories while the pre-trained attendees gradually move into leadership by assisting.

Many of the latter attendees also have opportunities to deliver a Bible story in a discussion style and to have personalized coaching. They become Practitioners. Those who attend the full, 37-hours of training leave as STS Practitioners, and many of them are also ready to be STS Provisional Instructors in other workshops.

To Get Started

First we find a suitable date for the host for which we can provide a lead instructor. Since we schedule one STS instructor for every three attendees for the first part of the workshop, we ask the host to estimate how many people might attend. That allows us to begin securing the needed instructors. They may be available locally or need to come from afar.

As instructors are available, STS teams will come to lead workshops for as few as three attendees in the leadership pre-training and nine new attendees in the practitioners section.

Total Who Can Attend

Workshops vary in size. For example: To train 90 people, we would send 6 instructors to train 15 core people for 18 hours, and then up to 75 could join the latter 19 hours of training. As instructors are available, STS teams will come to lead workshops for as few as 6 attendees in the full, 37-hour training, and a minimum of 6 in the latter 19-hour section. (More, up to 30, could join the last part.)

Venue Needs

For small to medium size workshops, we need one room that is large enough for everyone to meet together. As well, that room needs to be a sufficient size for small groups to separate out to study and deliver Bible stories. If smaller rooms or patios are available, which are directly adjacent to the larger meeting room, they can be used for these small groups as well. Less space is needed for the preliminary 18-hour training. Often churches provide facilities for workshops. Ask on larger groups.

Cost

It does not cost a local ministry or church to host a workshop. Headquarters staff assists the host in establishing a workshop registration fee that covers the expenses. Those costs include one meal and two snacks daily for attendees. If there is audio or written STS material in the language of the attendees, the registration also needs to cover the cost of the materials each attendee receives. If there is no way to get material to the location, there are handbooks and some audio in various language versions on the STS site that can be downloaded for free.

Instructors are not paid to teach, but we do help the hosts to compute the registration fee to cover the cost of food and lodging for instructors during the whole training procedure. Although not required, we heartily welcome any help toward the travel expenses for instructors who have flying or ground travel costs to get to a workshop.

Headquarters provides registration forms, bulletin inserts, brochures and flyers that the host can use (to send via email or print). A wealth of helpful “How to Host Tips” are available too.

Currently, the interest in workshops is such that the requests far outnumber the available instructors who can pay their way. Due to this interest and the cost and time that we and the instructors jointly invest to lead workshops, we ask for the workshops to be open to people outside the hosting ministry. We desire to best utilize our instructors’ time and investment by planting STS principles and skills into the widest number of ministries and denominations possible. After we leave, the diverse people trained decide how the study and sharing skills they gained can be woven into their distinct calls.

If, due to security situations, this “mingling” of attendees is not wise, we are happy to respect the local host’s wisdom and not have an open workshop. If a host wants to confine the workshop to attendees from their ministry, church or denomination, we ask that the travel costs for the instructors be paid.

Financially Challenged

In some areas of the world, attendees have financial challenges. TGSP believes in local ownership, so does not pay workshop expenses. Even if an outside ministry wants to help finance a workshop, we know that no matter how poor attendees may be, it is important that some part of an STS training be paid for by the attendees. Whether the attendees pay for their travel, food or lodging (or even just bring their own food), even the smallest contribution gives value to and ownership of the training. That is the TGSP standard. Through prayer we will consider unusual circumstances.

Variety of Schedules Available

1.    The 5-day full model includes 7 1/2 hours of daily instruction. Sample attendance hours could be Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Each day has two 15-minute breaks and a one-hour lunch.

At times it is hard for people to take off from work for 5 days. In that case, the 5-day schedule can be done on Tues-Sat or Wed-Sun as those options have fewer weekdays involved. Note: Since only a small percent of those who attend are involved in the first 18-hour training, the majority of the attendees only have to miss work for one or two days.

For all schedules, instructors arrive one day early to prepare and set up the training. We are constantly creating new leaders, so team members may be new to one another. The instructors we gather are from as close to the venue as possible, but sometimes they come from afar.

2.    We also offer a “Job Saver” 6-day schedule that is Friday-Wednesday. Hosts use this schedule when most of the interested attendees would struggle with taking time off from work. The instructors come together as a team on Thurs. The workshop starts on Fri and Sat with each day being 8 teaching-hours.

On Sat afternoon, additional attendees join the workshop. Sun afternoon, all meet together for 7 1/2 hours. Then all attendees come on Mon, Tues and Wed evenings for 3 ½ hours. Note: Only one day off of work is needed, and only 1/6 of the attendees miss that one day of work. Some attendees who travel from afar can also attend daytime bonus hours on Mon-Wed.o they need that day to solidify plans.

3.    If a unique local situation exists that might call for a schedule different than those we listed, we are happy to discuss a customized schedule that will work for everyone.
