Simply The Story Testimonies and Responses

Beyond Our Borders

"The STS trainers came to the102_5067_Girl_Presenting_Story Philippines two years ago and trained 220 people in three locations around the country.

We had made an effort to get people from a cross-section of urban churches, tribal missionaries, workers with other ethnic groups, and tentmakers working in other countries.

“Four months later I contacted a number of these people and found 1,400 people had already been trained and STS was being taught in 25 languages!

“Since that time it has gone out far beyond our borders and around the country for use with both literate and non-literate people. People particularly love Simply the Story because of how it helps them hear from God in a fresh way. Each story is a new opportunity to experience God.

“Now we use it for training of all people who get training for cross-cultural witness. We know STS adapts to the Bible stories and culture of any people group.”

"Black and White T.V."

[EB, who sent this letter, led the very first STS-Oral Bible School. He serves as one of a growing number of certified instructors now developing in the Philippines. He, and seven STS trained instructors from the Philippines joined with STS staff from USA and Australia. Together, they led an advanced workshop for instructors and a standard five-day workshop.

Afterwards, EB and his leaders from Negros, traveled on to a new location to lead yet another workshop in the Cebuano language. The report below is from that last workshop.]

Dear STS headquarters,
this is good report that we receive the first day of the workshop that the host pastor here is our previous classmate in the Bible college. he said that "before we are like watching black and white T.V. and after we tried the STS, we are watching the colored T.V." he said "this is the best." praise the Lord!!

he said "this is the answer of our prayer because we have a hard time time to disciples our own people because most of them are from Tribes and they don't know how to READ."

is a big challenge for us in this workshop how to teach this people, but just half of the attendees are do not know how to read.

pastor is interested in our vision that the oral Bible school for his people. thanks for every thing. may the Lord bless you! we are bless of the Lord uses you to taught us of how to teach people in STS way.
happy trip!!
from EB

One Month Later

Below you will first see a testimony from a workshop attendee.  Then you see the same attendee’s report one month later (after that person attended a second, more advanced, STS training.)

Johnkel (After Workshop)

This workshop is amazing I can say that revival in the land if the people are willing to be humble themselves in God’s word. when I listened to the story from God the instructor told, I can see and remember in my days when I was 9-13 year old that my teacher giving us story from the bible and it was great I was enjoying the story getting some spiritual lesson.

When I am getting older I miss those time in my life enjoying the story from the bible, because most of the churches right now are not telling the story anymore but most of them are telling about themselves and make me confuse about my faith in Jesus. I am fully convinced that story telling is a blessing from the Lord for his people to revive our heart back again to him.

Johnkel:  (One month later)

I was deceived my self thinking that only the Pastors and leaders in the church will know how to induct the story, but when I attended the advance training I found out that this is for everyone this system is from the Lord.

I thank the Lord for this system that I can feel more in his Word comforting my heart. Before I felt that the word of God is for hurting. Now I strongly believe the word of God is comforting.

I realized that most of the leaders here that I knew they need to know this system. I am amazed of how the leaders today presenting the Gospel that the reason that I know now why the church never grow in God’s Love and word but only in number.

I am happy to be part of this God’s work here in the Philippines to God be the glory.

Filipino Leader’s View: Difference Between Purely STS Way and Literacy
1-Literacy=

a) Good thing in literacy.
= first it will preserve the Ideas that will long last.
= the worldly standard are accepted to them this system.
b) Not good thing in literacy.
= the coverage of this system is so limited.
= needs more money for note books, bullpens, papers, board, marker place to sit up.
= needs more staff to work with me to do the job.
= the students understanding in the Bible are so shallow.
= their spiritual growth is not good.
= no life changing.
= only for the quick thinker of this system can be learned and the slow will be discourage.
= takes time to memorize the system.
= this system the students can boast themselves to others if they are good in the literacy.

=I was able to do it the Bible school by literacy base with in 3-years. based by my observation that I have the literacy study approachable only to the literate people but still Yet the people even they are literate in literacy style of learning I notify that my students finish the job but still they are not done.  what I am saying is that many people finish their study and when I ask them about what they learned they can not be able to express of what they got from the class unless if they look at their notes for how many hours.

=most of my students graduated in my class were struggling with their walking with the Lord and the percentage of the students who are involve in the ministry are very few About 2%.

=I notice that they need to grow more in spiritual understanding their view about their relationship with God as they are not deeper. The students spent a lot of time to study, lots of efforts to do the chartings in the bible and yet they don’t got the story from the Bible And they don’t understand what the story really mean.

=in this way of teaching its hard to see the level of the students about their understanding of the bible. and it needs lots of memorization and it is not relational class.  Even when I tried to mix literacy and oral way the problem was the students need more time to learned I though it was best way to give to the students.

=I notice also takes time in doing the memorizing the system .and I need also board and marker band paper ballpens which is costly.

2-STS way=
a) good thing in STS.
= not expensive, no need note books, bullpen, papers. Board, marker. Applicable for any places.

= the coverage of this system can cover to all kinds of people because I have 50-years old from the mountain that they don’t really knew how to read but still they got the stories by listening to the audio sometimes to their class mate .

= the students understanding in the bible are deeper .

= its good for the teacher the preparation will allow you gain more during the class discussion.

=  it has life changing of the students.

=  the slow learner will discover or understand together with the quick thinker. I have college graduate high school graduate and grade -3 and two grade-1 only but learned together in the class.

=  spending more time to the story to familiarizing it, but it is a fulfilling the  word of the bible to meditate it day night and after that the story stick to their heart pocket the wherever they go they can share even with out notes in the paper.

= the students will humble themselves in order to get the system because the system  is all about down to earth teaching.

=in my first year of doing the STS style in the class room it so awesome. This system I can still teach to the non literate person right now  I have two students that they have problem in reading because of their capabilities of reading are very low.  But I notice they understand the stories and they cry for the treasure that they see in the story.
I like this method because it so personal to the students .my students are so different now compare to other class before. I have confidence to this students to send them to the field to share the story.

=one thing I like the story telling that you will never see your students are sleeping in the class they so excited to tell the story in the class room. and this system needs only foods no more any expensive materials not like what I did last year.

=the students also are so transparent to me about their spiritual situation their growth, because of this I know what I am going to do for my students unlike last my previous style in the class room its hard for me to see their situation. I notice also that I can do it with 2-assitants with me in the class.
